Twins, How to Look After the Twins in Pregnancy
The diagnosis of twins is usually made at an early stage of pregnancy due to the use of routine ultrasound scans in early pregnancy. In view of the increased risk of problems in twin pregnancies specialist care is usually required where the twins will be carefully monitored by ultrasound to check for problems such as disturbance in their growth or twin-twin transfusion syndrome.
You should receive folic acid and iron supplements as anaemia in the mother is more common with twin pregnancies as you have two babies to supply with nutrients. You will be advised of the risk of premature labour and you should seek medical advice if you suspect you might be in premature labour. You will be monitored carefully for the development of pre-eclampsia with blood pressure and urinary protein being checked at every visit. You will therefore be seen much more frequently at the clinic.
