- Sleeping it Out: Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, MD, Columbia University Medical Center shares that the moment she feels sickness coming, she goes to sleep for a at least a good nine hours. Another trick she uses is deep breathing while lying on the floor with her legs elevated and propped against a wall.
- Getting Rid of that Nagging Headache: Dehydration is behind a lot many headaches. And Dr Jennifer Ashton, MD, co-host of ABC’s The Revolution and the celebrated author of Your Body Beautiful reacts to the first throbbing by having lot of water followed by a shot of caffeine. If that doesn’t work, there is always the option of popping ibuprofen.
- Do Brain Workouts: Keep your brain in good shape by playing word games like scrabble or crossword puzzles to enhance your verbal and mathematical skills, improve spatial abilities and strengthen your brain. Dr. Gary Small, MD, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, University of California, Los Angeles uses his smart phone to good use by playing these games in his free time.
- Ignore those Cravings: Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD and the well known host of The Dr. Oz Show recommends fighting untimely hunger pangs with about an ounce of raw walnuts. While these nuts are high on calories, they are also high on healthy fats.
- Build Strength: Being skinny may be in fashion, but it can kill! Whatever your reasons for wanting to losing weight, make sure you don’t do it by putting your health at risk. Dr Mehmet Oz, cardiothoracic surgeon, follows a short work-out routine every morning which includes cardio, strength as well as flexibility training. He suggests buying a pedometer and keeping a target of 10,000 steps a day for being healthy and slim.
- Include Veggies in your Diet: Include as many vegetables in your diet as you can instead of popping vitamin supplements. Dr. Margaret McKenzie, MD, assistant professor of surgery, Cleveland Clinic gets her daily dose of nutrients like vitamins, protein and antioxidants by having a filling salad that includes carrots, radicchio, Napa cabbage and edamame.
- Get your Beauty Sleep: We all know the importance of getting enough sleep; however, it eludes many among us. Do all it takes to make sure you get sufficient sleep each night. Dr. Hutcherson suggests giving your bedroom the right ambience before you get into your bed. This includes dimming the room lights much before you actually sleep, switching off your laptop, mobile and television and playing some soft and relaxing music to lull you into sleep.
- Ban Whites: Well, not all of them. You can still have fish, egg whites and cauliflower but you need to avoid most of the rest: bread, rice, flour, sugar, pasta. “They are primarily made up of carbs and empty calories, so cutting them out of your diet is one of the quickest ways to shed pounds and improve your well being”, says Dr. Oz
- Beat PMS Blues: Most women feel defeated by PMS: headaches, cramps, indigestion, the symptoms can be endless. As per Dr. Ashton, doing aerobic exercises regularly reduces these symptoms. She suggests doing cardio, like jogging, for about 45 minutes to beat symptoms.
