Baby Sleeping Patterns - Baby sleeping Position problem through the night
New babies tend only to sleep for 3-4 hours at a time, although overall they may sleep for around 14-18 hours a day. Their sleeping pattern may be quite variable. During the day they will nap for a few hours between feeds.
Many mothers like to have the baby beside them in a cot or a crib to make it easier to get to them and feed and to comfort them when they wake. Over the first few months your baby should get into a sleep routine with longer sleeps at night and shorter naps during the day.
To help establish the pattern many mothers have a bedtime routine, such as a bath for the baby at a regular time, changing the baby into a sleepsuit, dimming the lights or singing. The baby will soon associate these activities with 'bedtime'.
